AVENGERS: ENDGAME to Become Highest-Grossing Film of All Time

Still from Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame / Marvel Studios

By Dominick Ferrara V, Editor in Chief

During Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel Saturday night, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, confirmed that Avengers: Endgame is set to become the highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, unadjusted for inflation.

This weekend, Endgame surpassed $2.7892 billion worldwide and the film will go on to exceed the $500,000 in ticket sales needed to surpass James Cameron’s Avatar.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora,” Alan Horn, Disney co-chairman and chief creative officer, said in a statement.

Endgame is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is now the film that took the MCU to the top of the all-time box office charts.

  • DADDY’S HOME dropped just 25% from its opening weekend, and will cross the $100 million mark this week.
  • After a successful limited roadshow release, THE HEATEFUL EIGHT added 2,374 theaters this weekend.
  • This is likely the final time that the Hunger Games franchise will be in the top 10, with the franchise’s film failing to gross $300 million.

Next week brings the release of the horror film THE FOREST, as well as the expansion of awards season hopeful THE REVENANT, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, into over 3000 theaters.

Box Office Actuals: JURASSIC WORLD Claims Biggest Opening Weekend Ever

      By Dominick Ferrara V

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers have been the latest victim of the dinosaurs that call Jurassic World home.

After the actual box office results came in, Universal’s JURASSIC WORLD has claimed the biggest domestic and worldwide opening weekends of all time.

In North America, JURASSIC WORLD brought in $208.8 million, topping THE AVENGERS’ total of $207.4 million to become the biggest opening weekend of all time. The film also was the first film ever to debut with over $500 million worldwide, bringing in $524.4 million, including $100 million in China.

Disney has a shot to reclaim its crown with STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS in December, and Warner Bros banking on BATMAN V SUPERMAN to knock off the dinosaurs in March.

No matter how long this record lasts, it’s still an incredibly impressive feat for a film that was tracking at $125 million for the weekend.

Next week, it is challenged by Pixar’s INSIDE OUT, which could be the first Pixar film to not debut at number one.

Box Office: JURASSIC WORLD Roars To $204.6 Million Debut

      By Dominick Ferrara V

The weekend estimates are in, and a group of dinosaurs has stunned Hollywood.

JURASSIC WORLD brought in $204.6 million in its opening weekend, enough for the second biggest opening of all time, behind only 2012’s THE AVENGERS. The film also brought in $511.8 million

If Sunday traffic is higher than the current projection, then the movie could still top THE AVENGERS’ all time opening weekend record. In fact, many studios have the film topping or tying the record, but Universal is cautious due to Sunday night’s Game Five of the NBA Finals.

The opening continues Universal’s huge year, following big hits Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2, and Fifty Shades of Grey. The studio also has Ted 2 and Minions due out within the next month.

Here is the rest of the weekend’s top ten.

      1. JURASSIC WORLD: $204.6 million

      2. SPY: $16 million ($56.9 million total)

      3. SAN ANDREAS: $11 million ($119.3 million total)

      4. INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3: $7.3 million ($37.4 million total)

      5. PITCH PERFECT 2: $6 million ($170.6 million total)

      6. ENTOURAGE: $4.3 million ($25.8 million total)

      7. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: $4.1 million ($138.6 million total)

      8. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON: $3.6 million ($444.7 million)

      9. TOMORROWLAND: $3.4 million ($83.6 million total)

      10. LOVE AND MERCY: $1.8 million ($4.8 million total)

Next week brings the release of Pixar’s highly anticipated INSIDE OUT, which I am attending an advanced screening of on Tuesday. Will it bring in enough to dethrone JURASSIC WORLD, or will the dinosaurs rule the earth once again? Weekend Box Office Results: March 27-29, 2015

      By Dominick Ferrara V

Welcome back to the weekly article where we discuss the past weekend’s box office results, and what they mean in the business. Let’s get right to it!

      1. HOME: $54 million

      2. GET HARD: $34.6 million

      3. THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT: $22.1 million ($86.4 million total)

      4. CINDERELLA: $17.5 million ($150 million total)

      5. IT FOLLOWS: $4 million ($4.8 million total)

      6. KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE: $3.1 million ($119.4 million total)

      7.  RUN ALL NIGHT: $2.2 million ($23.8 million total)

      8. THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL: $2.2 million ($28 million total)

      9. DO YOU BELIEVE?: $2.2 million ($7.1 million total)

      10. THE GUNMAN: $2.1 million ($8.8 million total)

      Some notes:

      • HOME delivered a much needed win for Jeffrey Katzenberg and Dreamworks Animation, their first since their move to Fox. Even HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 couldn’t bring home a W, because of the release of 22 JUMP STREET. In fact, Home had a better opening weekend than HTTYD2. Speaking of Fox, they have 3 films in the top ten this week, with Home joining Kingsman and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
      • GET HARD performed well, being only the second comedy to open with at least $20 million, with THE WEDDING RINGER being the first. Both films star Kevin Hart, who may now be the most bankable comedy star.
      • THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT dropped 57.8% from its opening weekend.
      • CINDERELLA, despite another family film opening, only fell about 50% and still managed to bring in $17.5 million.
      • IT FOLLOWS expanded this weekend, going from 32 theaters to 1,218 theaters. Despite a lack of marketing, it still brought in $4 million.

Next week brings the juggernaut known as FURIOUS 7, which is tracking at nearly $120 million, which would break the April opening weekend record, topping CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Weekend Box Office Results: March 20-22, 2015

      By Dominick Ferrara V

It’s that time of week where you have seen the movies, and now we find out if they will get a sequel or not. The box office is the reason why or why not your favorites will receive a sequel. Let’s see how this weekend’s releases stack up.

      1. THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT: $54 million

      2. CINDERELLA: $34.5 million ($122 million total)

      3. RUN ALL NIGHT: $5.1 million ($19.7 million)

      4. THE GUNMAN: $5 million

      5. KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE: $4.6 million ($114.6 million)

      6. DO YOU BELIEVE?: $4 million

      7. THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL: $3.5 million ($24 million)

      8. FOCUS: $3.3 million ($49.4 million)

      9. CHAPPIE: $2.7 million ($28.3 million)

      10. THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER: $2.4 million ($158.8 million)

So, this was a solid weekend at the cinemas. As usual, the teen book adaptation claims the top spot, as INSURGENT opened to the exact amount that its predecessor did. With 2 more films scheduled, Lionsgate should be very pleased.

CINDERELLA feel about 50%, the normal drop for a major release from week 1 to week 2.

THE GUNMAN disappointed, but could still move up to number 3 for the weekend, while DO YOU BELIEVE? did solid business this weekend despite its lack of a marketing campaign.

Next week’s new releases include the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy GET HARD and Dreamworks Animation’s new film HOME.

Weekend Box Office Results: March 13-15, 2015

      By Dominick Ferrara V

Welcome back to this weekly series where we give you this weekend’s box office results, with all of the blockbusters, bombs, and surprises of the weekend. Let’s go!

      1. CINDERELLA: $70.1 million

      2. RUN ALL NIGHT: $11 million

      3. KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE: $6.2 million ($107.4 million total)

      4. FOCUS: $5.81 million

      5. CHAPPIE: $5.8 million

      6. THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL: $5.7 million

      7. THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER: $4.1 million

      8. MCFARLAND, USA: $3.7 million

      9. AMERICAN SNIPER: $2.93 million

      10. THE DUFF: $2.9 million

As we all expected, CINDERELLA won the weekend big, bringing $70 million domestically and an additional $62.4 million dollars overseas, including $25 million in China.

RUN ALL NIGHT disappointed reeling in just $11 million. Audiences are clearly growing tired of Liam Neeson-led action films whose titles do not with TAKEN.

After falling out of the top ten last week, the juggernaut known as AMERICAN SNIPER climbed back into the top ten, just one week after becoming the highest grossing film of 2014 domestically (limited release on Christmas for awards qualification).

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY fell out of the top ten, but still brought its total up to a 2015-high $161.4 million, a mark that won’t last for long.

Next week’s releases include THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT, whose marketing campaign has led many away from the film, and the Sean Penn-led action film THE GUNMAN. Will INSURGENT claim the prize, or will CINDERELLA hold its crown thanks to positive word of mouth? Leave your top ten for next weekend in the comments below!
